History

Although the total number of Episcopalians living in Stanly County, North Carolina has never approached that of other denominations in the county, Christ Church has a remarkable history that can be traced to the determination of one woman to see that there was a presence and influence of the Episcopal Church for her family and friends. Because Christ Church in Albemarle is the only Episcopal Church in the county, its members come from a wide geographic area resulting in a rich diversity that is appreciated and serves as a resource for growth and outreach.

The Episcopal Church Welcome Sign

Over the years, a number of programs that have been instituted by Christ Church have grown beyond the bounds of the parish and are now activities supported  and administered  by the communityat large. The Christ Church Food Pantry and Community Christmas Dinner are two excellent examples of programs initiated within the parish.

Like many churches, our history is marked with valleys as well as peaks. Yet, throughout all of the years it is the people that have passed through the church doors who have shaped the parish that continues to this day. Christ Church parish would not be considered a  wealthy parish in terms of financial resources but it has been extremely “rich” in the talents and commitment of its members. Reading through the church history it is obvious that much of what has been accomplished has been done through the determination and will of the members. Parishioners are not afraid to roll up their sleeves to work to maintain what has been entrusted to us from our predecessors and to work together to tackle new endeavors. By working together we are strengthened to reach our common goals while growing in relationships with one another. Several years ago when a group of parishioners was recording their special memories of Christ Church, one member provided some insightful commentary on the important relationship between work, fellowship and worship that are a part of our heritage.

"Others see how much strength Christ Church gives to each other in time of need. Sharing fun, as well as work and worship, has helped bind the congregation into a caring community."

The information found in the following timeline has been derived principally from Christ Church: One Hundred Years written by parishioner, Dr. Juanita Kruse in 1990 as a part of the  commemoration of the church’s centennial. Additional information regarding the work and life of the parish since 1990 has been drawn from various sources including the parish newsletter, Bread & Wine.
